Crash StepsIndependent public guide · not a law firm

Educational information only. This is not legal advice, medical advice, or an emergency service. It does not create an attorney-client relationship, and a disclaimer is not a promise that the page fits your crash. If someone may be hurt, call 911.

Insurance claim timeline

Order dates you already know and see elapsed calendar days, with first-party timing explained separately.

Only after you are safe. If someone may be hurt or there is immediate danger, call 911. This workspace is general information, not legal advice or medical advice. It cannot determine fault, coverage, compensation or a legal deadline.

Inputs stay in this tab’s memory. No account, upload, POST form or saving of these tool inputs. Reloading clears them. The separate original checklist saves checkmarks only.

Use dates already in your own records. There is no “all information received” assumption and no automated violation finding.

Your result will appear here. Change any input and build the plan again.

How to use the result

Use this as an organizing aid, then read the linked playbook and original official source. Do not enter names, policy identifiers, plates, medical details or a crash narrative here. There is no claim submission, lawyer matching or case review.

First-party statutory stages—not automated due dates

  1. Under §542.055, acknowledgment, investigation and reasonably required item requests are generally due within 15 days after notice is received; eligible surplus-lines insurers have a different rule.
  2. Under §542.056, a written acceptance or rejection is generally due within 15 business days after receipt of all required items, statements and forms. A qualifying extension requires a reason notice, with a decision generally no later than the 45th day after that notice.
  3. Section 542.057 generally provides five business days for payment after notice of acceptance; a required act by the claimant and surplus-lines rules can change the starting point or period.

Section 542.051 defines business days to exclude Saturdays, Sundays and state-recognized holidays. Section 542.059 provides a catastrophe extension under stated conditions. A weekend-only calculation would not faithfully implement these rules, so the tool deliberately shows calendar gaps, not statutory deadlines. TDI says the prompt-payment law does not apply when the other driver’s insurer is paying.
